Fornalutx

Fornalutx is a small village located in the Valley of Sóller. It is bounded by Sóller and by the municipality of Escorca.

Its origins go back to the 13th century. It developed around the site of a Moorish hamlet. The entire village is of great architectural and landscape interest, and is kept in a good state of conservation.

Fornalutx, as well as Biniaraix, Llucalcari, Deià and Banyalbufar, have an urban configuration of Muslim origin. The same happens with the structural design of the terraces on which farm work and irrigation are carried out.

The simplicity of the houses in the village, its simple and austere architectural structures, with big walls made of mud and stones, is a clear example of the typical Mallorcan mountain architecture, which reflects a rural way of life that has been maintained unchanged throughout history until de 70s (20th century).

Agriculture, based on the citrus fruits growing (orange and lemon trees) and on the olive harvest, has always been, together with craftworks and cattle farming, the central point of a survival economy based on austerity.

In 1983, the village of Fornalutx was awarded the Mallorcan Tourism Board Silver Plaque for the defence and maintenance of the village. That same year, the General Secretary for Tourism awarded Fornalutx the 2nd National Price for Towns embellished and maintained in Spain. In 1985, the village also obtained the “Premi Alzina” from the Balearic Group of Ornithology and Defence of Nature.
