María de la Salut

This municipality is located in Es Pla and is bounded by Santa Margalida to the north, by Ariany to the east and south, by Sineu to the southwest, by Llubí to the west and by Muro to the northwest. It covers an extension of 30.3 km² and has a population of 1781 inhabitants.
In Maria de la Salut there are twenty archaeological sites with remains from prehistoric and ancient historic times. There are burial caves from the Pretalaiotic culture and fortified settlements from the Talaiotic period.
The Roman presence has been documented thanks to the discovery of tiles, ceramics and coins. The name Maria appears for the first time in the Distribution Book in the 13th century.
Its parish church preserves a statue of the Verge de la Salut (“Virgin of the Health”) that dates from the Saracen domination.
Son Puig, the area that surrounds the church, was the initial population centre in this municipality.
Its economy is mainly based on agriculture. This municipality produces cereals, almonds, carobs, melons, garlic, tomatoes, peppers and wine. It also raises sheep, goats, some pigs and poultry.
It has several agricultural transformation companies, as well as sausage factories. It has also small blacksmith, carpentry and metalwork workshops, which are very prestigious and of high quality.
