Marratxí
This municipality is composed of several population centres: Marratxinet, Pont d’Inca, Pla de na Tesa, Sa Cabaneta, Pòrtol, Es Caulls and several more. Four of them have their own church: Sa Cabaneta (San Marcial), Es Pont d’Inca (San Alonso Rodríguez), Es Pla de na Tesa (San Lázaro) and Pòrtol (Nostra Senyora del Carme).
The archaeological remains found in this municipality give evidence of almost all the cultures that have lived in Mallorca: Talaiotic, Roman, Arab and medieval Christian.
In the 13th century, King James I granted these lands, which had just been conquered, to the Bishop of Barcelona, Berenguer de Palou, who had contributed to the invasion by arming 99 knights and 1000 servants. These lands belonged to the Barony of the bishops of Barcelona for a very long time.
The first time that this municipality appeared in the Distribution Book it was referred to as Barraxino.
The first parish church to be built in this municipality was the church of Santa Maria de Marratxí, founded in the 13th century, in 1248 to be precise. However, the main current religious centre is the church of Sant Marçal.
In 1864, the town hall was moved from its original spot, Marratxinet, to Sa Cabaneta, its place until today.
