Muro
Muro is an important municipality located on the north part of Mallorca. It has two population centres: Muro and Platja de Muro (5.5 km long). Muro is bounded by Santa Margalida to the southeast, by Maria de la Salut to the south, by Llubí to the southwest, by Sa Pobla to the west, by Alcúdia to the north and by the sea to the northwest.
This municipality has an extension of 55.4 km² and a population of 5872 inhabitants. The village has been settled since prehistoric times. For that reason, it became an excellent vantage point over the sea already in the Roman period.
In this comarca there are 51 archaeological sites. There are a great number of lived in caves from the Pretalaiotic culture and many isolated talaiots from the Talaiotic period. Some coins and tombs from the Roman period have also been found in this area, amongst other things.
S’Albufera de Muro, today a natural park, is located in this municipality.
In fact, an important stretch of the beach has been preserved in its natural state due to the landscape quality of this area: the Albufera Natural Park and the protected zone of Sa Comuna de Muro, both considered as Biological Reserves.
S’Albufera Natural Park consists of 1708 ha of meadows (wetland), marshlands and dunes of great ornithological value and extraordinary beauty. It is a real treasure near the hotels in Platja de Muro.
S’Albufera is an old lake that originated 18 million years ago. It is separated from the sea by a belt of dunes, which for many centuries has filled up with sediments turning it into an extensive flood plain. The basis of S’Albufera’s ecological richness is water. The permanent inundation of much of the Natural Park provides favourable conditions for a continuous vegetation growth. The range of plant species gives shelter and food to a multitude of animals, which at the same time feed other animals. Thanks to the abundance of water, the diversity of living organisms is very high. In other words, S’Albufera is the ecosystem with a greater biodiversity in the Balearic Islands.
This Natural Park gives shelter to 1708 ha of marshes and dunes.
Platja de Muro stretches 5.5 km along the coast of Muro. It is located in the Bay of Alcúdia, on the north of Mallorca, an area composed of Can Picafort, Port d’Alcúdia and Albufera Gran. The beach (within the 8.5 km of the Bay of Alcúdia) consists of dunes covered with low plants and pine trees.
The hotels in Platja de Muro have all services you can imagine so that visitors can enjoy their holidays with their family or friends in a privileged enclave in Mallorca. Muro is one of the best places for windsurfing and hiking lovers, as well as for those keen on discovering natural spots.
Platja de Muro has a wide variety of hotels and services, including sun lounger, sun umbrella and water skies rental, as well as refreshment stands and showers just a few metres away from the sea.
In terms of agriculture, Muro’s fertile lands, which are rich in water, provide the markets in Mallorca with vegetables of extraordinary quality.
