Santa Eugenia

This municipality borders Sencelles, Algaida, Palma, Santa Maria del Camí and Consell. It has an extension of 20.48 km² and a population of 1000 inhabitants. It is part of the district of Es Pla and its lands are mainly flat, with beautiful places of high landscape interest, such as Puig de Santa Eugènia and Puig de Son Seguí (320 m), which is covered with forest.
13 archaeological sites located in this area prove the presence of human beings in prehistoric and ancient historic times. Remains of the Talaiotic culture have also been found in the settlement of Rafal, where you can find a big circular talaiot. In the cave of Can Palou a small bronze statue was found. It is believed that this statue of Greek origin dates from the middle of the 5th century BC.
During the Arab period, Santa Eugènia was part of the hamlets of Benibahari and Benibazari. The Distribution Book (1232) includes information about the concession of some land to Bernat de Santa Eugènia.
Santa Eugènia is an interior municipality located close to Palma. Its economy is based on the building and service sector, agriculture, cereals and wine.
Information of Interest
Some of the most important heritage elements include: a church from the 18th century, the mills of Es Puget, the convent of Franciscan nuns, an old restored well and a Jewish cemetery, the only one in Mallorca (located next to the Christian cemetery).
The Tower of Santa Eugènia (15th century) is currently an agritourism destination. In the past, this house used to be a vineyard that produced a wine known on the island as Wine of Santa Eugènia. Its cellar is the most representative part of the house.
