Cuevas de Artà
Located on the coast of the municipality of Capdepera, in Cap Vermell, the caves of Artà are surrounded by mountains that dominate the sea. They are spectacular caverns, a place you cannot miss. They are open all year long.
The visit is between 25 and 40 minutes long. Only one group enters every 30 minutes. The visit is offered in Spanish, French, English and German. The interior temperature is about 18 °C and humidity is 80%. Adult tickets cost about 7 €, while children tickets are 4 €. They open at 10 am.
Once you have gone through the entrance, which is very high, you access a vast area known as Hall or Entrance Room.
There, you can see countless stalactites of wonderful shapes and extraordinary proportions hanging from a high vault. Tall stalagmites emerge from the ground shaping human forms, mysterious, still and rigid figures indifferent to the human eyes, with the imposing superiority that characterises all creations of nature.
During this visit, you will have the chance to see a 22-metre high stalactite located in the Queen’s Room.
You will also attend a light and audio spectacle in one of the other rooms, known as The Hell.
Finally, and after discovering multiple and charming galleries, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views over the bay of Canyamel.
In the caves of Artà, the underground waters that run over the waterproof layers damage slowly the upper clayed layers up to the point that the latter collapse creating an empty space covered by other calcareous or tufacelous layers that support themselves thanks to its vaulted shape. The formation of caves takes place in almost all kind of surfaces, although it is more common in calcareous areas, where they reach gigantic proportions and fantastic shapes.
