La Lonja, the best representation of the Gothic style in Mallorca
La Lonja (s. XIV), former home of the College of the Merchandise is the best representation of the Gothic style in Mallorca. It is one of the masterpieces of architecture in the island. It was built by Guillem Sagrera between 1420 and 1452.
This Majorcan renowned sculptor in the fifteenth century, was commissioned to build a place for the needs of merchants.
The result was a simple building, well balanced composition, shows the Gothic style on the island.
Its plan is rectangular, a single space divided into twelve sections by distinctive baseless pillar and capital, whose shafts of helical edges are raised to the ceiling to form the ribs of the vaults.
The exterior retains its regular appearance in the paintings on the facades are set by a set of rectangles. The decoration is mainly in large warheads that decorate the windows. In addition, each exterior angle is topped by octagonal towers, increasing the integrity and unity of the building.
